Schengen Visa Photo Requirements

Last updated: July 21, 2026

One photo spec covers every Schengen-area visa application, whether you're applying through France, Germany, Italy, or any other member state.

Covers all 27 Schengen countries: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.

Photo Size

Requirement
Physical (print)35 × 45 mm
Digital (upload)413 × 531 px

The pixel size above is the exact size our tool outputs, sized to match the official physical spec at 300 DPI — it is not a minimum you need to exceed. We haven't independently verified whether this destination's own upload system also accepts a wider range of sizes, so treat the exact size above as the safe, always-accepted choice.

Head Size

Chin to crown must be 71–80% of the photo's height — about 32–36 mm on a 45 mm-tall print.

Background Color

Schengen countries generally accept white, light grey, or light blue.

Some member states have their own narrower rule — France, for example, does not accept a pure white background, so light grey is the safer cross-Schengen default.

Why do print and digital sizes look different? They're the same physical spec expressed in two units — see our Physical vs. Digital Photo Size guide for how the conversion works.
